Rubber Expansion Sleeves for Extreme Temperature Applications

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): EPDM has good heat, ozone and weathering resistance and is used in high temperature applications.

Split Expansion Sleeves: These sleeves are split in two halves – as their name implies – for installation around existing piping systems. They are applicable to high-temperature applications up to 600degF (315degC) and can move axially or laterally.

Slip-On Expansion Sleeves: These sleeves are slipped over the pipe ends and secured with flanges or clamps. These can operate at temperatures of 450degF (232degC) and are therefore typically employed in applications where space or accessibility is an issue.

Convoluted Expansion Sleeves: These sleeves are fitted with a series of convolutions or bellows for axial and lateral movement. The aforementioned are especially suitable for cryogenic applications with liquefied natural gas (LNG), liquid nitrogen, and other ultra-low temperature media. This convoluted structure is very flexible and resists low temperature brittleness.

Gimbal Expansion Sleeves: Gimbal sleeves are spherical expansion joints that can accommodate axial, lateral and angular deflections. They have been applied to cryogenic piping systems where thermal movement is possible in multiple directions.

Non-Reinforced Vibration: Those sleeves are constructed without internal reinforcement and are thus very flexible and suitable for low temperature applications down to -320degF (-196degC). These NRV sleeves are widely used in cryogenic facilities for liquefied gases such as LNG terminals and storage facilities.

Follow Manufacturer’s Instructions: For each expansion sleeve type and material, the manufacturer may specify installation requirements. Follow these installation instructions carefully.

Ensure Proper Alignment: Misalignment can cause uneven stress on the expansion sleeve and premature failure. Align the sleeve with the piping system using appropriate alignment tools and techniques.

Allow for Adequate Flexibility: Expansion sleeves need space and flexibility for the expected movements. Check that the installation location allows enough clearance so the sleeve can move freely without obstructions.

Secure Connections: Follow recommended torque specifications for flanged expansion sleeves. In the case of un-flanged sleeves, clamps or other securing mechanisms should be tightened and secured.

Proper Spacing: The expansion sleeves should be spaced apart along the piping system to allow thermal expansion and contraction. Check manufacturer guidelines or engineering calculations for recommended spacing.

Alignment with Anchors/Guides: Align expansion sleeves with anchors, guides, or other support structures to prevent excessive stress on the sleeves or piping systems.

Regular Inspections: Perform periodic visual checks of the expansion sleeves for wear, damage, or deterioration. Find cracks, bulges or other irregularities that may indicate replacement.
